You know, sometimes I’ll be reading scientific non-fic and think “Wow. Maybe I am somewhat intelligent.” Then I pick up a book like this and wonder if I even understand English (which is my native language - so I should). That being said, it is definitely a spooky little story and great Halloween month read. I found some of it repetitive and I hated the ending (just a personal thing, I guess).

we glanced at this story a little bit in a-level, for the gothic paper, but all i remembered was the "suspiciously lingering smile" on madeline's lips because i used that quote endlessly when discussing the uncanny.

but it was good! i find it quite hard to read poe's prose because it takes a lot of concentration to be fully invested in every word that he writes. but i really enjoyed the story.

the idea that the fall of the house of usher represents both the physical crumbling of the manor house and the end of the family of the ushers is great. nothing is left behind.
