I laughed. Out loud. While listening to the audiobook in my client's home. I'm going along, cleaning the windows and laughter burst forth. She looked at me like I was a crazy person.

. . .

I'm not. I'm sane.
Just stop.

Okay, it's funny. Laugh out loud funny. And I know it's about a guy who yelled profanities at his kid but at the end of the day he has a heart of gold and all that jazz. But, maybe not hiding your feelings or your humour or your vulgarities is a better way of honestly being than living down to expectations.

Then I made the mistake of reading other reviews. You know, sometimes this shit I pour over the page doesn't come easily and I need crib notes. Yeah, you people suck.

Everyone includes funny quotes from the book. Not because they need to in order to tell how the book affected them, but because it was easy to google-copy-paste and make their reviews longer. Quit cheating people. Okay, it's true, I was going to do the same thing until I saw that everyone else had done it.

"It's just a cash grab" . . .

Well no shit. Of course it is and good for him. He creates a wildly popular twitter and then cashes in on it and gets to live quite well for a decade. I'd do the same fucking thing. Give me a break. Writing for altruistic purposes creates homelessness, pal.

"It's mean to talk to a child like that." "It can be scarring."

Yup, we all have daddy issues. I'll trade with Halpern any day. Go back to worrying about something important will you. Don't pick up satire if you want self-help.

"I wanted this to be funnier."

Don't we all? Fuck, I want everything on the planet to be funnier, but sometimes we get reality in with our humor and it sobers us . . . yup, that's called life.

Alright I'm done.

But I'd read another one by Justin, or by his dad.

How this book went for me illustrated with stars. First part: 5 stars. Second part: 4 stars. Last part: 3 stars.

Sadly it was just getting boring with each age. I loved the part of his childhood, it made me laugh and it was great. However starting with his teenage and adult phase, it just got boring and more of the same thing. Even the whole story part just didn't interest me and I skipped to the quotes. But even those got a bit boring around the last 2 stories.

What I expected was something totally different. I had expected a book of quotes with some funny pictures. However, we get a story about a certain event happening (going from childhood to adulthood) and then we get a few quotes. The stories were funny, at least the first few, but like I said in the previous paragraph I kind of got bored with them, since they were mostly the same story just wrapped differently.

I did love the dad though. Even though he cursed a bit too much for my liking (especially near children), he has a heart of gold and you can clearly see he really cares about his kids and wife. One thing I didn't expect was that he was a scientist. From all the cursing and how he saw things I expected something different. Don't get me wrong, but in general I don't see scientists or doctors cursing like this or acting like the dad did. It was a bit strange.

All in all, I would recommend this book, just be warned that it a lot of the same thing.

Date started: July 1, 2010

Type of book: Memoir

My interest in this book is: Wanted to see if he was like my dad.

Message/ideas expressed/plot: Things a father says, though he loves his son.

Favorite characters/Quotes: Too many are too crass.

When I finished this book I felt: What a crass jerk. I don't care, you don't have to be such a jerk. I hope I'm never this bad.

Notes, comments.

Normally, for me, vacation is for re-reading, but after plowing my way through Song of Ice and Fire I wasn't in the mood, so I picked this out.
It was way more charming than I expected it to be, and I annoyed my family by snorting and giggling my way through it in an afternoon. Short and fun.

Such a hilarious little book. My husband and I listened to the the tape in two or three days while cooking dinner together and it had us both laughing out loud at multiple occasions. Not only is this book obviously filled with very funny one-liners from Justin's dad, but it is also a sweet story about family love and the relationship between father and son. I don't agree with any of the previous reviews about Justin's father being a bad parent, and I'm annoyed that so many reviewed the book negatively because of the use of colorful language. This is a story about a man and his father, who happens to talk like a sailor. If the swearing will bother you, skip this book.
