There's only so much that I can say about this without getting into spoilers. It's an idea that has been done since, making a big splash, and yet this still has the power to surprise.
SpoilerThis is basically Dick's version of the Truman show (1st by 40 years, mind you) with a dash of the Matrix tossed in--which means it is much much trippier and imbued with more philosophy and politics.
. It's Dick at some of his most brilliant work, though of course it's also very dated (I mean more his depiction of women than what the then future would be like.

This story represents what I expect from a PKD novel. It's full of mind-bending twists that leave the characters and the reader questioning the nature of reality. These sort of ideas are why Dick's oeuvre has had such cache in Hollywood. A great read!

It’s cool it really predicted the idea of baby boomers insulating themselves in an imagined version of their childhood and destroying any hope of progress we have as a society

Maybe that’s hyperbole but still, 1956 swish from half court

I am currently making my way through a PKD backlog and I am happy to say I quite enjoyed this one. I knew nothing about this book and went into it blind, which is how I like going into most books (sometimes descriptions can really spoil the plot), and I really enjoyed the experience! The writing felt similar to A Scanner Darkly in that you kind of feel like a fly on the wall, listening to very mundane, normal conversations between friends/family members. Sometimes this style can drone on a bit, but for me it really worked in this book. I thought the concept was original and fascinating, and the explanation for it all at the end was pretty believable. Overall, a very trippy book that did a good job explaining everything so I wasn't totally lost.
