Ragle Gumm spends most of each day entering a newspaper contest, submitting his guess as to where the "Little Green Man" will appear next on a grid. Every day, he wins. As Ragle questions the meaning of his repetitive existence, he also begins to question reality itself. Why is he famous? Why does he seem to be the center of the universe? Published in 1959, this was a quick and intriguing read.
This was my first PKD book, it was fine but not as good as some of his other books.
This is quintessential Philip K. Dick. The nature of reality is explored in a wonderfully paranoid way, as the protagonist begins to doubt his sanity. Or are his memories being manipulated by his mysterious neighbor? The book starts innocently enough, in a quiet suburb where people have ordinary lives. Gradually, things get weirder and weirder. The reader has more of a sense of what's really going on, as the point of view occasionally shifts to other characters, but it's all encoded in terse, cryptic descriptions and dialog. The ending comes fast and furious, with explanations and motivations that make sense, but with less grounding than there could have been. It's as if Dick reached his word count limit and just decided to wrap up everything. Nevertheless, this is a book that will keep readers off balance and thinking about how their lives can be manipulated by external forces, an idea that is more relevant today than ever.
Eu gosto muito da forma como o autor escreve seus livros. Apesar de ser de ficção científica, a escrita do Philip K. Dick é de fácil leitura, o que ajuda o leitor a entrar na história. Isso foi exatamente o que aconteceu comigo, que desde as primeiras páginas já me peguei envolvida pela família de Victor e por aquele universo. A maior surpresa, por incrível que pareça, nem foi o desenvolvimento da história, mas as questões filosóficas que ele aborda no final.
A respeito da história em si, a princípio achei que fosse girar em torno da família Nielson como um todo, e não que teria um foco mais em Ragle. Enquanto os eventos esquisitos iam acontecendo, eu ia criando mil teorias diferentes do que poderia ser que tivesse acontecendo com eles, mas eu não acertei nenhuma. O livro te deixa ávido por ler o mais rápido possível para entender a história e encontrar alguma explicação. Vi algumas pessoas falando que lembra o filme O Show de Truman e fiquei bem feliz por não ter assistido, porque eu fiquei bem surpreendida quando começou a ser revelado o mistério por trás de tudo.
Apesar de ter deixado algumas pontas soltas, eu gostei bastante da história. No primeiro momento eu não gostei tanto do final, do motivo pra tudo aquilo, mas depois eu comecei a pensar melhor e gostei do autor ter saído do óbvio. Eu gosto da forma como o autor colocar questões filosóficas em seus livros.

I did not expect where that was going. Pretty good overall, except with the usual critique of speculative sci-fi where things just don't age well and there's a bias toward the current time. No diversity in race or sexuality, etc. However this didn't detract too badly from the story. And is it just me or is technology always seemingly way too advanced for the time period imagined? Not just this book but every book. Maybe I'm just a pessimist.
Anyway, rant over. It's a good, quick read. If you like mystery/sci-fi, this one's for you.

L'opera di Dick - Weir con il suo "Truman Show" ringrazia sentitamente - sonda con innegabile efficacia l'effimera percezione sensoriale della realtà circostante, da tutti considerata inalienabile e incorruttibile.
L'autore dipinge, con disarmante lucidità, la società americana anni '50, succube dei timori della guerra fredda nonché vittima inconsapevole di un mondo depositario del "pensiero prestabilito" - falsi ricordi, mezze verità, microversi fallaci -, che gettano non pochi dubbi circa il libero arbitrio e l'effettiva libertà dell'individuo inserito in un contesto sociale.
Come quasi ogni romanzo dell'autore, l'originalità del tema supera di gran lunga la prosa, a tratti grezza e poco raffinata.

This is very early Dick indeed, but still its captivating and interesting, given that it's written in 59 the cold war of course are forward in mind, but still read in 2017 it don't feel dated.
Dick plays with some of his favorite themes, later to be perfected in UBIK and "we can remember it for you wholesale", the whole concept of the individual versus the rest of the world. How do we know that the physical world actually exist ? and if it exists is it only as a background theme for your life, after all we are all the most important person in our own world.

This isn't a great book, but it has several interesting aspects. This is a bridge book between his early pulp sci-fi, his general fiction that he was writing at the same time but couldn't sell, and the more mature speculative work that came after this.
