Tough definitely brings up great points about the path to success. This is definitely a must read for teachers and parents, who are willing to start implementing serious changes. While I applaud Tough for challenging many notions, I do wish he brought up practical suggestions as well. At times the book seemed more of a collection of research than his own conclusions. Overall a good read.

There was nothing new in this book that I have not seen in theoretical books I read for college. I'm not sure why I thought there might be something that I hadn't read before, but there was not.

Actually a 3.5. It was interesting, but the large section dedicated to the game of chess really lost me!

Very thought-provoking and interesting. It made me think a lot about how I approach things as a parent, but it also made me look at my attitude about my own life and successes and it helped shape new thoughts about both areas.

This book balances a great deal of current research in education and learning with real life examples. There are a lot of nonfiction books where after reading a book review or two, I don't feel like I need to read the actual book as all the main points have already been covered. That's not the case here. This book is pretty dense with information. I wish it could have done more in answering some of the difficult problems of how we help children acquire character skills they need, but the author is probably limited by the current research.
