4.5 stars? I love Lady Sherlock. My only complaints about these books are the number of POVs and characters, it gets a bit confusing if you haven't read the rest in awhile. But overall this was a good read. Part of the overarching mystery at least somewhat, but a good isolated mystery (a murder! on a boat!). Also SO happy to see Livia finally stand up to her mother!!

Book seven in the Lady Sherlock series. Largely a four star read, but a very strong and unpredictable ending, which bumped it to a five for me.
A Tempest at Sea features a number of the characters from previous books, come together sailing on a ship, and you guessed it, a murder occurs. Our heroine, Charlotte, is still in hiding from Moriarity. But, while in hiding, she must go on a quest to seek something important, in hopes of safely reclaiming her life.
I feel this book was a bit different than the other Lady Sherlock books. For one, Charlotte herself is almost a minor character IMO. We spend a lot of time with Lord Ingram in this one, more than any other 'main character'. Perhaps Ms Thomas chose to write it that way, as Charlotte IS still incognito, so it makes sense for her character to take slightly more of a backseat. She's still the star in the end, even if she has less overall page time.
This is delightfully twisty and turny, and a bit more of a slow burn than previous books. It's also not spicy AT ALL, and has very minimal romance (I'm not complaining). As always, I love how Lord Ingram cherishes Charlotte's quirks, and doesn't take her (Autistic coded) personality in a negative way, because he knows her.
What made me really happy is, I did NOT guess the culprit, not even in the least. I can frequently figure out the end plot of a book, but this one really keeps you guessing, which I loved. Still one of my favorite series!

A fun jaunt for Miss Holmes out to sea! While maybe not my favourite of the series, it’s still fun to revisit these characters.

This was a good murder mystery. Loved the structure of back and forth through time to tell a more interesting story. Usually I hate when the reader is left out of plans or key information, but this is done really well and just entices me to reread the book, knowing what everyone knows at any given time. More Olivia! I need her!

These are comfort reads/listens for me - this installment was enjoyable but not a standout of the series for me. It steps back a bit from the overarching Moriarty conflict to focus on a single mystery, which I didn’t mind, but it felt like time with characters other than Charlotte and Lord Ingram was limited, and honestly, there wasn’t even a ton of Charlotte.
On the positive side, this was a particularly good example of one of my favorite qualities of this series. Thomas uses a close third person and is extremely good at holding information back organically, based on what her chosen narrator at any given moment would know - for example, the denouement is from Livia’s perspective, who has even less knowledge than the reader does. Randomly eliding conversations/details that could give the answer away too soon is a mystery pet peeve of mine!
