I loved The Sea in Winter and I enjoyed this one just as much! I read it in one sitting.

Cute middle grade but a bit too cheesy for my taste, but again I'm not the target audience so. This would be impactful and informative to children though!

A middle grades book about belonging and feeling like an outsider within your own culture. Lots of kid friendly references to big topics; would be difficult to read without background of Native American history within the US.

In this debut MG novel we meet Edie, a young girl who is on a mission to learn more about her Native American heritage after discovering a mysterious box in her parent’s attic.

It’s a 3.5 due to pacing issues, but in light of the ongoing atrocity of family separations, this book shows that it’s nothing new in this country, unfortunately. Also, I like more stories about contemporary Native Americans, since all too often we’re taught that they lived a long time ago but don’t exist today.

This was a great homage to pre-teen angst, looking for answers, and the complicated changing of relationships.
The “twist” was unfortunately expected and absolutely heartbreaking, devastating.
I loved the ending, so real/honest/beautiful.

This was such an exceptional book. I've been reading more middle grade books recently, and this novel is easily the best I've read.

Day allows the mystery of Edie's mother's adoption to build up naturally, slowly doling out the old letters from Edith in a way that makes the readers feel like they absolutely need to find out what happened to her. And the revelation of why Edie's mother was adopted was absolutely phenomenal. Typically, when I read middle grade novels with a mystery included, the ultimate reveal isn't as satisfying to me as I expect it would be for a member of the target audience. Of course, this is what I would expect since I am an older reader. However, the reveal that came towards the end of this book was not at all what I was anticipating. It truly felt like a punch in the gut when I read what happened to Edith, and Day's depictions of the other characters' reactions only served to heighten the response I had to this book.

This book is an excellent addition to anyone's bookshelf, and I would highly recommend reading Day's author's note at the end.
