it had a killer prologue and a promising concept, but its execution with the titular "cult" was not my favorite. i actively disliked the journey and wanted to abandon it but pushed through.
Spoiler the prologue hinted at some unthinkable wrong Clive committed to earn him his death, but in the end it was more deus ex machina
. i wish it leaned more into its mystery and grand conspiracy aspects; that would have made its bordering-on-pretentious philosophical musings on love and the human experience more bearable. the main character always had some snarky quip and after a while it became annoying, a guard put up to forgo genuinely engaging with other characters.

also, i would like to propose that the title should have been Cult Following rather than Cult Classic.

This was a wildly entertaining, surprisingly cathartic story with a great voice and at times some of the most beautiful modern prose l've ever read.
I will be thinking about this book for years to come. If A Christmas Carol and Glass Onion and Tinder had a love child, this book would be it.

The idea of the story was really interesting, up until
SpoilerThe reveal about the surveillance cult
. It kind of just meandered into nothingness after that, with the reader being forced to follow a deeply unlikeable character whine her way through her past actions. I was personally offended by the choice to make the main character
SpoilerLie about a sexual assault to a former boyfriend for sympathy
. As an abuse survivor, it was gross, wholly unnecessary, and spoiled any goodwill I had towards this story.
