If I could give this six stars, I would. Oh this book is so witty. It's a joy. 'Once upon a time there was a hungry lion...packed into a picturebook with a pile of cutesy little animals. I wonder what will happen next...? The meta-play between narrator's expectations, animal behaviour expectations mixed in with soft, lovable expectations of picturebooks is played with so, so well by Cummins and I adore her for it.

Loved the surprises in this. While the drawings seemed a bit simple, by the end they weren't too distracting. At first I thought the repetition was a bit annoying, but by the surprise, it just added to it. I think students would enjoy that as audience participation.

Personally, I find the books where characters get eaten a bit stressful. And this one is extra tricky.

The idea is fine. Actually I was expecting a counting book. This did have a twist. And a twist on the twist. And then yet another one. But the art was only okay. And the writing was kind of meh. So the idea was the best part and it was really only okay. But still not a bad book, especially for a read once.

Ugh, I wrote a really good, thoughtful review and accidentally deleted it.
Ugh.
Ugh.
Ugh.
Just know that this was almost a 5-star for me.
Read the book.

It's hard to know exactly what I thought of this one when the F&G I saw did not have final text or color (unless that was just talking about the cover) BUT this seems like a fun one. I think some of the page spreads were a little busy and didn't quite jive with the text but overall a lot of fun. Could see this appealing to I Want My Hat Back fans quite a bit.

It can't be easy to get a plot twist into a 32-page picture book, but lots of picture books manage it. TWO twists?? Twists that make ME, a serious adult superconsumer of picture books, raise both eyebrows in surprise??? GENIUS.

I liked this. It was a pageturner that did not end how I suspected it to. Also, that title :)
