This would definitely get a higher rating if the MC wasn’t so ridiculously unlikable. James Patterson stop writing female detectives challenge, just say you have no idea how to write badass FMCs and go! The MC is fucking insufferable and she does not get better unfortunately, but I’d say the plot does make up for that. Sure, it’s pretty slow in the first 50% of the book, but then it does pick up. It gets interesting! And spooky, and anxiety inducing. All the things a thriller should be. It made my heart race, it’s very intense.
I hated the ending so much because it’s sad and felt unreasonable (I just wanted the characters to get a break, they’d been through so much ☹️). My softie side just wanted a happy ending lol.
But honestly props to this book for making me invested even though I couldn’t stand the MC. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that physically affected me as much as this one did, so I’d say this is a solid thriller.
In conclusion: Could it have been better? Yeah. Did it do the job (make my heart race, make me anxious, make me care about the characters)? Yes!
