I’m not a fan of historical fiction, but I LOVED this book!! The first 50 or so pages I was unsure about it, however it quickly ramps up and you find yourself inthralled with these women and the work they are doing. It’s a great book whether it’s read or listened to. The author does a fantastic job weaving the story of these real women into the story of the fictitious women. I think what makes this book so great is that the author really didn’t add a lot of unreal events into her story. She found letters and then tweaked and added here and there to create “Band of Sisters”. You can feel that the author cares about these women and this story, so much so that it’s almost impossible not to care yourself. At first the book seems so long, but by the end you still want more and it doesn’t seem long enough. A must read!!!

It was slow to start, but eventually I really cared about these women and their relief efforts during the first world war. A fictionalized account of what happened to the real SCRU, but a good solid read in the end.

Band of Sisters is an incredible novel about the women of Smith College who traveled to France during WWI to support those impacted by the war. It's an incredible part of our history and one I'm horrified to admit I had never heard about. I'm so glad Willig brought the impressive history of these women to light and I look forward to including their work in my future lessons on WWI when teaching my 8th graders.
