Omg! Did this series get REALLY good!!! Sarah J Maas seems to start her series off simple with minimum characters & world building & their good. But once she’s a book or 2 in, she like let’s loose! Quadruples the amount of characters, makes the world so much bigger, and just lets all the drama and problems unfold. & I have to say it is a brilliant strategy. You don’t necessarily get fully hooked to the story in the beginning, but she’s not throwing a lot of stuff at you at once. If I started this book without having already known some of the characters, I don’t know if I would have been able to follow along and remember who all the players are. But having been brought into the story slowly, I followed it so easy, and I am thankful for that!
This book was incredible! I can’t wait for the rest of the series & to hopefully meet even more amazing characters!

While attempting to figure out how to stop the King's power, Aelin must go to the last remaining land of the Fae and face her aunt.

I found most of the book very slow paced, until like like 70% mark or so. Aelin's training became tedious really fast. I get that there was a big focus on building her and Rowan's characters and relationship, but it was so repetitive.

Around the 80% mark, I finally started to actually like Aelin. Yes, she has always been badass and resilient, but she has also always been so whiny and bratty. Finally, she started to come into and embrace her own power. She started to act like the Queen she is: a force to be reckoned with.

Rowan was an ok character. Pretty stereotypical fae male. I did really like his and Aelin's banter and the arc of their relationship in this book. I think he has the potential to be an interesting addition to the series.

There were SO many POVs and jumped around so much, that I kind of lost interest in some of the storylines after a while. It felt like a bunch of stories ripped apart and thrown together. Each should have been their own novella. I feel like I would have been more interested and invested in the characters. Aelin, Rowan, Dorian, Chaol, Manon, Sorscha... Am I missing any? It's a lot.

I think that the Chaol and Dorian plotlines fell flat for me.  The only bright spot for me was the the addition of Aedion. I cannot wait to see the chaos that will reign when he is ruined with Aelin.

Manon and the witches were another interesting addition. I am excited to see where their storyline goes, especially with the addition of the wyverns.

Tropes: fantasy, magic

This was a difficult book to rate, because although I loved Celaena's plot, and I found the other plots interesting, I hated flicking between the three stories. Particularly when there was only one instance where two of the stories intertwined, albeit in such a minor way. This made me throw down the book multiple times when I just didn't want to read about the others at the moment.

Additionally, I felt the change in Rowan's character was ridiculously insincere. I couldn't reconcile that broody war hero with, for want of a better phrase, the eager-to-please puppy he was at the end.

I felt like the beginning of the book dragged a bit, but as always with sjm books the second half of the book was a whirlwind. I thought the progression of the story was interesting, and am eager to pick up the next book in the series.

Omg!!!! It's picking back up!!!

Unfortunately, I can't give this book a full 5 stars because the first half is quite a bit boring. But the second half makes up for it tenfold.

First and foremost, I love Rowan. He was really mean to her at the beginning but they made it up to each other pretty well. Also, page 315... in tears. And I absolutely loved his loyalty to her by the end of the book. Made me so happy and proud and giddy.

I love how strong Aelin has become. The part about her nurse made had me in tears, no child should go through such horrors. She is such a powerful, wonderful FMC, and I can't wait to see how er character continues to grow throughout the series.

And last, but not least, the Aedion/Dorian/Chaol section... Absolutely has me in an anxious wreck. They better survive or else I stg.

Cannot wait to start QoS! Getting through CoM for this was absolutely worth it!!!
