As a Star Wars fan I have been looking forward to this book, to see Obi-Wan and Anakin's relationship more in depth, and given that it's taken just after becomes a Jedi Knight and the start of The Clone Wars, I was excited to see what changes there would be to they're relationship.
I was expecting them to have some troubles; arguments and having some difficulty adjusting to they're new roles - no longer one ahead of the other, but both on equal grounds. While Obi-Wan did have little mix ups in calling Anakin a Knight instead of Padawan, there wasn't much after that.
Instead the story resolves around a devastation in Cato Neimoidia and it seems that the Republic is the one who did it, determined to prove the Republic's innocents, Obi-Wan travels to the planet to look for evidence. I was expecting Anakin to go with them where they're difficulties would start, however the story had Obi-Wan going in alone. So what would Anakin do?
Beside him spending time with his new wife, Padmé Amidala, which made me smile so many times, he is kinds forced to teach the younglings. It's funny and cute, and it introduces us to a new character Mill Alibeth, who possesses powerful empathic powers which she has difficulty controlling, but luckily for her, Anakin is there to help her.
While I found that nice, along the way it got, for me, quite the opposite.
Anakin shares things with Mill that he hasn't shared with anyone other than Padmé (and later Obi-Wan), he opens up about his Mother and the stories she use to tell him to Mill. All throughout it all I couldn't help but think of Ahsoka - she was the first person Anakin trained and was her Master, and she his Padawan - even Mill's attitude towards him was similar to Ahsoka's. It makes me feel like Ahsoka got cheated, because why is this character in this place? Ahsoka was created by George and Dave to show Anakin's growth from The Attack of the Clones to Revenge of the Sith, so Mill wasn't needed. It leaves a sour taste in my mouth, and not only do I feel cheated for Ahsoka, I mostly feel sorry and angry for her, because Anakin opened up to this youngling who he has only know for a day or two - while he has known Ahsoka longer and is her Master, yet never told her about his Mother and such - and least that we know of.
There were mentions of Satine that I loved, and the fact that Obi-Wan knew that if he told Anakin, that his former Padawan would tease him for it so he kept it silent is hilarious. The fact he wonders as well what would have happened if he left the Jedi Order to be with her is heartbreaking, because us Clone Wars fans know what happens (I still haven't forgiven you Dave) .
We also get Asajj Ventress, who I was so happy to see and I loved all of her scenes. She's such an interesting character and I loved watching her in The Clone Wars animated series and in Dark Disciple (Dave, I haven't forgiven you for her either).
Overall the book wasn't what I expected, which is a shame to me and I didn't really like the whole thing with Anakin and Mill, but there were moments that I really did enjoy.
