The Willows by Algernon Blackwood is about two men who enjoy exploring the wilderness until they come across a river delta of the Danube and the unsettling things they discover there.

Thoughts while reading:

-This story was brought to my attention when I started an anthology and the editor mentioned that this book resonated with his idea of ‘weird fiction’
-The story wasn’t grabbing me at first but the atmosphere eventually builds
-I like ‘the Swede’ but the narrator drives me crazy

The book managed to convey a strong sense of atmosphere and wrongness that caused the characters to slowly unravel, but I found that because I didn't connect strongly with the characters, it affected the level of tension I felt.

Overall, I would give it a 3 out of 5

"But you're quite right about one thing, " he added, before the subject passed, "and that is that we're wiser not to talk about it, or even to think about it, because what one thinks finds expression in words, and what one says, happens."

I read this after reading The Hollow Places by T Kingfisher, which borrows heavily from it. This is a brilliant piece of otherworldly horror, and I loved it.
