This was my first book by Sebastian Barry. This tale is very bleak and atmospheric. Our protagonist Tom is a retired police officer who is spending his days in a house by the sea. His past is full of tragedies and they are gradually presented to the reader. One day two police officers knock on his door and Tom is forced to confront his past face to face.

One thing that stood out to me while I was reading this book was the writing. Barry's prose is beautiful and melancholic. He makes the reader work for the meaning behind the words and parts of the novel feel like a fever dream. To make things more interesting Tom is definitely an unreliable narrator, so there are many devastating revelations along the way. Unfortunately, the prose undermines the plot progression. Tom is the sole narrator of this story and there are many times when his stream of consciousness commentary interrupts the action and the reader is forced to go back in time to relieve Tom's past instead of concentrating on the present. It's completely possible that Barry intended the prose to flow that way, but I found it distracting and it took my attention away from the story.

I would recommend this book to the fans of literary fiction and character-driven stories. If you enjoy melancholic and atmospheric prose, this novel should appeal to you. Additionally, if you're interested in the themes of grief, guilt, loneliness, old age and death Old God's Time should satisfy you. Overall, I liked this novel, but it wasn't perfect.

A meditation on memory, pain, brutality and loss. About systemic violence & a society that propped it up for years & years & the hurt & damage that has endured in its victims.

Η ιστορία έχει γρήγορη αφήγηση που ξετυλίγεται σαν κουβάρι αλλά και με έντονο το αίσθημα της ζοφερής και κλειστοφοβικής ατμόσφαιρας. Οι αναμνήσεις και οι στιγμές του Τομ που θυμάται από την υπόθεση, καθώς και προσωπικά βιώματα και εξομολογήσεις της οικογένειας του από το παρελθόν, είναι γροθιά στο στομάχι. Ο συγγραφέας σε βάζει στην ιστορία και σε κρατάει δέσμιο, νιώθοντας όλα τα συναισθήματα που νιώθει και ο πρωταγωνιστής, φόβο, θλίψη, μοναχικότητα, αμφιβολία, δειλία. Δεν ξέρεις σαν αναγνώστης τι να πιστέψεις και τι όχι. Τι είναι αλήθεια και τι ψέμα. Ο Τομ παρουσιάζεται αναξιόπιστος χωρίς να είναι σίγουρος για τίποτα, δεν γνωρίζει τι είναι παρόν και τι παρελθόν, όλες οι σκέψεις, θολώνουν τις μνήμες του. Άραγε θα τα καταφέρει; Θα βγει από όλη αυτή την κατάσταση;

“No one minds life as long as they are not trying to leave it. Nor death, as long as they are not dying.”
