2023 REREAD

Enjoyed it a lot more than the first time, changed my rating to 5*. Not a perfect book by any means but very enjoyable and hard to put down. Love the dynamic between Meg and Ted.

***

FIRST READ (2020)

I liked this a lot more than I thought I was going to. I thought the concept for it was an interesting one, but the plot didn’t really unfold the way I quite expected it would.

I really liked the character of Meg. She was good fun, very strong, I liked how she tried her best to stand up for herself even when everyone was trying to keep her down. Teddy I liked a bit less than her, but I warmed up to him as the story went on. Despite that I thought they had a lot of chemistry together and there was a lot of sexual tension between them.

However, I thought that the way Meg was treated by literally everyone else in the story for the majority of the book was really harsh and a bit over the top at points. She was a bigger woman than I would have been. Whilst I understood it from a narrative perspective, I found it a bit repetitive at times. I just wanted her to catch a break.

I also didn’t really like the side plot involving an investor in a new golf park. It felt dragged out and a little forced.

Finally, whilst I knew this was part of a series when I read it (I didn’t fancy the descriptions of any of the other books in the series), I did think it very heavily relied on the reader knowing who everyone was. Sometimes a character would show up and the way it was presented in the text was as if there would be big cheers if the scene was being filmed in front of an audience. I liked it despite this but at points it was a bit annoying.

I would recommend it if you like enemies-to-lovers, small-town romances.

Content Notes: Hate-to-love, small town, best friend's ex.

Warnings:
Spoiler Sexual harassment, sexual assault (not involving hero), dubious consent
SpoilerThere's a scene where the hero and heroine have sex; he is aggressive during it, and whilst she is presented as enjoying the encounter, he feels guilty.

Other:
SpoilerOn-page sex, unprotected sex
SpoilerNo condoms used, FMC is on BC.

As always, SEP writes a marvelous book, and it was special because we revisit so many old friends from previous books. I didn't have a clue how SEP would portray Teddy and she did an outstanding job, Meg and Teddy were wonderful; the story sweet and emotional, loved it!!

This was a bright, funny enemies-to-lovers story where both the H and h grow as people. Unfortunately I really disliked how hateful the Wynette townspeople were to Meg (and honestly, to Lucy) that I had to subtract a star. Every single one of them was mean and nasty, with behavior that was unforgivable within the structure of the story.

This is, however, where all the previous books finally come together. The last 3 were in the Wynette TX series but didn't have anything to do with Wynette until this one. Meg is the daughter of the couple in Glitter Baby, Lucy is the daughter of the couple in First Lady, and Ted is the son of the couple in Fancy Pants. And we see the characters from Lady Be Good in this book as well.

Cover: Um, nice but it doesn't have anything to do with the story. Meg has dark curly hair!
Narrator: Okay, although a little too old.
Hogwarts Sorting Hat: I think they're both Gryffindors at heart.

Themes: runaway bride, small town, family

Maybe if I read the others, this would've been better but man this was bad. The entire town was so unlikeable that they didn't deserve a single good thing. The MMC was awful and the FMC should've left town ages ago.

The first 200 pages were just too painfully to read. If I didn't already read reviews that it will be better towards the end, I wouldn't have read it through.

SEP mostly let's her heroines suffer, but is it just me or did this women particularly made a fool out of herself? Also, many things were quite redundant, as if SEP thought her readers could not remember what she had written 100 pages earlier.
In the end I almost wished those two would not end up together, which I also thought like 90 percent of this book overall.

In RL love is also not perfect, but if this is a kind of role model for people, when you have to completely ridicule yourself to be in love, I'd rather be single.

The 2 stars are for having some better moments and dialogue in this otherwise dreadfully written book.
