Listened to the audiobook, which I /highly, highly/ recommend doing if you're able. The narrator adds a whole new level to the story with her voice.

I loved it so much! I really enjoyed this novel. The characters were complex. The world building was great and I feel like I could picture it all in my mind. It had a bit of everything I wanted to read as well adventure, mystery, dystopian, the smallest hint of romance, and some good friendships. I also loved that Talin used sign language to communicate! I've never read a book before where that is the case, so that was very neat!

I really liked this book. I got into it easily and was compelled to continue reading. The author's writing style and characters were good. I loved the side characters as well as the MC. I loved having a mute MC. The different relationships especially between the MC and her mother were great. The relationship between Talin and Red felt real to me and I loved the build of it. The ending wasn't anything special but I am still interested in the second book. Also, I liked that the author made the output of the fight realistic.
Side note: I recommend the audio-book. The narrator did a great job.

1.5 stars for the 1.5 months it took me to finish this…
Let me preface by saying that most of my reviews I try to make objective. However, this review is entirely subjective. If this is your style, you’ll probably rate this much higher than I did, but unfortunately this is not mine.
I didn’t feel emotionally connected to a single character, and I felt all except the main character were generally shallow. Overall, I didn’t enjoy the characters, storyline, or action, and the ending was unsatisfying.

This is peak YA science fiction!! Love you Marie Lu omg
The world building is super interesting and very immersive. It's the perfect depth for a YA book, where it follows some recognizable tropes/conventions but has its own unique twist and it's done really well. The characters were distinct and had realistic backstories and personalities for this world and I really grew to love all of them, even the more minor characters. I also loved how Marie Lu wrote communities of people drawn together for various reasons. It all felt so grounded within the history and setup of this world, which just added to the fantastic immersion.
The action is so good! It felt so cinematic and was easy to follow. It was also exciting and I wasn't bored, even during the longer fight scenes. Maybe it was because I was listening to the audiobook, but I felt like I could see the fights playing out and I was so invested.
Cannot wait to read book 2!!! Would highly recommend if you're looking for a YA fantasy with military aspects and a vaguely post apocalyptic setting/our society destroyed itself and another has grown in its place
