I read this to my sons (11 and 8) as part of our (my!) attempt to educate them with the classics. I was familiar with the general story but never knew what a literary delight this book was. My kids were definitely bored in some of the more philosophical passages but for me they were sublime. In general the kids enjoyed the tale (especially the antics of that old Toad - we speak of him all the time) but their star rating was 3 out of 5. So this 5* rating comes from me, for the surprise, for the delight and for the joy of the beautiful words of Kenneth Grahame.

As a child I despised Toad and always felt a weird undercurrent of ick that I didn't understand. And once humans started getting involved, I found it weird.
As an adult, I still despise Toad, that weird undercurrent of ick is still there and once the humans get involved I STILL find it weird. I think this is just one of those stories I will never like..

Listening to a book with a full cast advertised as unabridged, one could expect it to be true to text. The version I heard was flawlessly performed with a bit of...adjustment to the men characters-they were female! When I wanted to see how the animals looked, I was surprised to see them portrayed as male which explains why I always thought it Mr. Toad instead of Lady Toad. Huh, learn something new every day.
