I was very nervous about this book. It’s outside my usual genre and it’s a very long story. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it though! The storyline and world building is phenomenal. I’ll definitely have to go back and read it again because I’m sure I missed a lot of details and facts. The characters are so diverse and interesting - such a weirdly amazing novel.

Alright, so after two months of being "in transit" through my "currently reading" list, I think it's safe to say that I've given up on Dune, for now at least. Honestly, I liked so many aspects of the story - the messiah symbolism, good vs. evil, etc., etc., - but ultimately it ended up being too boring to read. Whenever my mind won't focus on a book after 100+ pages, it's very rare that I'll change my mind and decide to like the book. Maybe I'm just too distracted right now with so many other options and I do think this will be a book I pick up again in the future, but for now it's being placed on the rejects shelf until I change my mind.

Still the granddaddy of sci-fi but like your granddad, it has some outdated ideas.

This book has been recommended to me over and over and over again. I felt the same way when I finally read Cyteen. I appreciate the world the author created, but I was honestly bored reading most of it. There are high concepts throughout, but told through characters that somehow seemed to lack humanity. Maybe that's the crux of my distaste. The main characters lacked compassion in favor of cruel "necessities," that I'm just too near-sighted to see that actual point of them. An unpopular opinion, I'm sure, but it is what it is.
