This was such a beautiful novel, incredibly sad but beautiful. Reading this as at my age now I fully understand why it isn't meant to be a love story but I still really enjoyed it

Like most people, I read this in high school, analyzing every line for hidden meaning and obscure metaphors while creating a list of words I needed to look up in the dictionary. Re-reading this as an adult was a far more enjoyable experience, to say the least.
I won’t go into the plot- if you haven’t read this book, go ahead and read it and then watch the dazzling movie adaptation (which is arguably even better than the book? Feel free to discuss with me). But I do want to go into my feelings about this book now that I’m old enough to not idolize a character that carelessly murders someone (shots thrown). On my second round of reading this classic, I came to the harsh realization that Daisy (beautiful, ethereal, perfect) is not someone to be adored. What’s even scarier is I still am endeared to her as much as I dislike her. Tom is awful, Nick I quite enjoy, and Jordan is a very forgetful and one dimensional person. But Gatsby. I don’t know what changed, but in my ripe old age (I joke...) I have developed a soft spot for him and his completely delusional and grand ideations that ended up ruining him. He is often talked about negatively, and I understand why- he is the epitome of single minded carelessness, overly extravagant wealth, and unfounded idealism. But I felt for him so much in this story- he deserved better. That is all.
Perfect when paired with a glass of pinot noir, a light throw blanket over the couch, and crickets chirping softly outside your opened window. 4.1⭐️

Entering my reviews over from my old Goodreads profile I unearthed recently...here are some super sappy thoughts from 2009-era 14-year-old Claire!
God, Fitzgerald's writing is just breathtaking. He didn't use a single unnecessary word, and yet, he still managed to create a vibrant, pulsing world.
