I have a new Favourite Novel Ever.

This book is beautifully written, packed with fantastic characters and atmospheric locations. And it's a beautiful, beautiful, story.

This book was everything I hoped it would be and more. I  love me a good coming of age novel. It’s a coming of age story in historical context which not only introduces Michelle’s character, but also follows a family drama and touches upon the stories of Soviet immigrants who ended up in Paris.

In this book we are following a story of Michelle as he grows older and goes through his teenage years. Michelle discovers a chess club in the back of a bistro. He makes friends with the people who ended up in this club - the club of incoririgible optimists.

I’ve recently been drawn to a specific genre of books that portray all the small things that make us human. The more masterful the writer is, the more you relate to all the tiny details they draw your attention to. By the end of the book you almost feel like you know the main character in person. For me, this puts the Club on the same shelf as ‘Stoner’.

Michelle grows up, falls in and out of love. He’s trying to figure out what really matters to him in this life. It’s not so easy when the little world around him seems to be falling apart.

Once again we are reminded that there is both good and evil within us. Perhaps this is why the ending was so shocking and sad, but also made a great deal of sense. Hard times.

This book will stay with me.
