You really get a good bang for your buck with this book, as there is a lot of content, and I think that was my favorite part of it. The chapters are fairly short and punchy, through the perspective of about eight different people, and each character goes on their own journey throughout the realm of Westeros. This book is lengthy and took me months to read, and although there is a lot to take in and the lore is complex, I never had trouble picking it back up. If I didn’t like one storyline, I could just read through to the next chapter and chances were there’d be something for me there. I really enjoyed most character’s perspectives, and even the more stale storylines were still great. There’s just so much to talk about with this book- after I got done reading it I found myself trying to relay the plot back to myself from start to finish, but there’s so much back story and information, I found it hard doing so, in the best way possible. I can’t wait to read the rest of this series.

Varys gave a long weary sigh, the sigh of a man who carried all the sadness of the world in a sack upon his shoulders. "The High Septon once told me that as we sin, so do we suffer. If that's true, Lord Eddard, tell me ...why is it always the innocents who suffer most, when you high lords play your game of thrones?"

A Song Of Ice And Fire still embodies what a perfect fantasy is to me (the charactes, the lore, the writing and the plot). I enjoyed every chapter of it. Though I could definitely do with less (or, better yet, none) descriptions of Daenerys's body and her sexual intercourses with Drogo.

Didn't think I was going to enjoy it as much as I did. The writing is amazing and I really loved this book. The writing is incredible and it completely immerses you in the world of Westeros/Essos. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. My only problem is that at times I didn't enjoy the structure of so many charcter perspectives. I would be so immersed in the chapter/storyline and then the perspective would change and all that tension that was being built disappeared. I definitely have my favourite charcters and I found that when it was someone I didn't like as much, the chapters were more difficult to finish. However, I did like that the majority of the chapters were the same size (10-20 pgs.), it really helped me progress. There are also some strange time skips within the story, especially towards the end. While the characters often knew what was happening, I was lost for a while trying to figure out what has happened in the days/weeks/months that have passed (the time jumps are never really specified which I didn't like either). Overall, the story was incredible. If the plot hasn't (or has) been spoilt for you, it is worth the read.

Readding this review after some thought
Possitive things: Daenerys' story, dragons and whitewalkers.
Negative: Cant write 10 year olds for shit. The rape fantasies are longer(multiple pages) than the loving spouses sex scenes.
The only reason I didnt DNF is cause I wanted to see how it ends but not worth it
All the TWs

After I finished Game of Thrones I had a conversation with my dad. I told him I loved the series so much and was considering reading the books because I was just that desperate for more content. He very matter of factly told me that reading the books was just "too nerdy." For context my dad is a classics professor who consumes books like he needs them to live, aka he's a nerd of all nerds. If he was telling me this then it genuinely would be too far to start reading, yet here I am not heading his warning and transforming into a total nerd. My new reborn nerd self is now the proud owner of the box set of all released books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series.

I think the person I was earlier this year would've hated this book so much. Thanks to Kristin Cashore's Graceling Realm series I've matured as a reader and sincerely become a fantasy fan. The slower pace, world building and detail intense writing is exactly what there is to love in the genre and George R. R. Martin is the master of all of those things. I get bored easily, yet even when reading chapter upon chapter of content I've already seen on the screen my attention is held. My biases created by the show definitely are following me into the reading and I find myself dreading certain POVs (...specifically Dany's I KNOW CONTROVERSIAL OPINION) and hanging onto every word of others (Sansa, I love her!), but this just goes to show how masterful Martin is at creating compelling characters people identify with and are passionate about. I just can't wait to get into the next book and start on Jaime and Brienne's interactions!!
