I read this book in a day - it was very good - 4.5 stars really. Difficult to categorise. The style reminds of E Annie Proulx - very terse, short staccato dialogue and books set in a rough terrain where life is hard and unforgiving - swap dust-ridden, rugged, central states of the USA for the windswept, sea battered islands of coastal Norway and you have it.
The book tells of the hard and unforgiving life on one of these isolated islands through Ingrid, a young girl whose family own the island of Barroy. The storyline, set during and after WWII is harsh but really good. Look forward to others in the trilogy.

Surowa i brutalna w swojej ciszy. Tak bym ją określiła.
Autor przedstawia nam dalsze losy bohaterów z wyspy Barrøy, na której wcale nie żyje się łatwiej, a dochodzą kolejne zmartwienia. Wojna przynosi swoje żniwa. A Ingrid musi pozostać silna.
Tak jak poprzedniczka - pięknie, choć oszczędnie napisana.
