Ok, I should NOT have started with this book as my introduction to Agatha Christie. I’ll be honest. I didn’t like it. It felt like a lot of discussion, and round and round pondering and witty thinking over “whodunnit”.

I should have started with one of her earlier works. But since it’s Autumn

Hang on. There was some kind of suggestion that a daughter had unknowingly fallen in love with their father. Eurgh! Basically, there is this person in the story that is always described as extremely beautiful (I'm just going to call them "Galad" to avoid spoilers. WoT people will know) and this other character says very blatantly that they loved Galad:

Poirot said gently, "You loved [Galad]?"
"Oh yes," said [redacted]. "I loved him very much."

AND THEN only a few pages later, it is revealed by [redacted]'s mum that Galad is their actual father! Meaning that they loved their father, and probably not in the familiar kind of way! I had to read the part again to make sure, but yep! That's what it reads like! Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

A good mystery with a great opening setting. The rest of the atmosphere was a little lack lustre. I was hoping that being a book set at Halloween would heighten the suspense a bit more. All in all, a solid Christie mystery.

This isn’t a very good example of AC’s writing and mysteries. This lacks originality and is very repetitive. It has little to do with Halloween - except the stage of the murder, a party. The characters just repeat the same ideas over and over and it’s very long winded. Even the mystery isn’t very interesting - which is should be since a child died at a party!
