The story continues

Not a bad follow-up to the first activation book. A little short with some tedious dialogue, but reasonably enjoyable nonetheless.

Ok so this is the second in the series so I knew what to expect and read the book very quickly. Again the story is fast paced and full of action, a bit predicatble in places and a bit of clunky dialogue. I'm pretty sure that is because the story is told from the point of view of Harry, so it's mainly about his thoughts about his brother. There are places where things are over explained or strange tangents are created. This could be improved if the story was told from both Jack and Harry's perspective, however that is just my opinion. And having said all of that I still really enjoyed the story and will read the next one.

I'll say 2.5/5, but round up. The second volume felt rushed towards the end, as though they feared a third, concluding volume wouldn't materialize. We get some closure between the two books, but I do wonder if the brothers are biding their time on another sequel.

Also! This series has one of the highest secondary and tertiary bodycounts outside of a George RR Martin book. Good Lord.

Still, on the balance, entertaining...if uneven.

We return to our Manchester lads caught up in the plot of a shadowy organisation. If you have read the first one, you will know about the Thanos-y overtones the the plot.

First, there was the First Activation, which resulted in a world where everyone had one goal: a murder-suicide. The first part of the novel was survival horror as two brothers who escaped this fate try to stay alive amidst this crazy scenario. I really liked that part. After they stumble on some of the people who are behind it, it turns out to be more of a stop the bad guys kind of books. I was less a fan of that.

Unfortunately, Second activation was more of the latter. In every sense of the world. It was still very fast paced and certainly entertaining, but it also felt a bit repetitive. Also, everyone who was not one of the three main characters were dying like flies even though the main characters themselves obviously never get hurt. They are THAT good. The ending left room for another book, but I'm not sure there is one.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
