I enjoyed reading this book and with any short story collection I liked some more than others. I found that partway through the book the stories became more political and based on human evil instead of mythology. I would have liked if it was evenly spread out through the book so it did not feel like the book had a change halfway through. I did find the last story Limbs by Waubgeshig Rice to be more gruesome than the rest.

You want chills? Then don't whistle in the dark--you might attract bad things hanging around the night. And don't, whatever you do, read this anthology!

There are lots of scary creatures in this book. They may lurk around the campfire as grandmothers explain how to protect yourself against them, as in Royce K. Young Wolf's "Human Eaters". They may be conjured up when a girl deliberately ignores her mother's advice to have a blue eyed baby, as in Mathilda Zeller's tension-filled "Kushtuka". Or they may even be stealing stories from elders themselves, as in Richard Van Camp's excellent "Scariest. Story. Ever".

Whether the fight is against traditional monsters, or the horrors of colonialism and displacement, the 26 stories in this anthology of Indigenous dark fiction are all consistently good. Which is no surprise considering there are contributions from writers like Tommy Orange, Marcie R. Rendon, Rebecca Roanhorse, Mona Susan Power, Cherie Dimaline, Darcie Little Badger and Brandon Hobson.

So don't go whistling at night. And don't read this book at night, either. Became it is scary, very entertaining and sometimes even thought provoking.
