Mouse finds even more than she bargained for when she goes to clear out her dead grandmother's house. Her grandmother was a hoarder, and an unpleasant woman, so Mouse knows she's in for a difficult few weeks. But when she finds her step-grandfather's old room, she uncovers an uncanny mystery. I occasionally enjoy reading horror, and for me the interest lies in the mystery, and the idea of discovering some unnameable threat. At the half-way point in this book, Mouse pretty much uncovers all of the mystery, and from then on, the story was drained of tension or intrigue. It turns into a fantasy chase through a strange landscape, which seemed poorly realised and didn't hold up well as a narrative. Disappointing.

exactly the kind of horror I love - the kind where you don’t realise how much it’s scared you until you take the dog for a walk through the woods. and god fuckin knows I love a Creature (or several)
