This was my first outing with Kingfisher, and I think it was overall successful. The voice of the main character is really strong and initially gave me pause; However, I quickly grew to love Mouse and the friends that she made along the way and found myself deeply invested in the mystery of the twisted ones and the green book. The last 50 pages or so got a little weird, and it didn't totally stick the landing, but it's good enough that I could see myself rereading it, and I definitely will be reading more from Kingfisher in the future.

This is horror, but somehow horror light, but the scary parts will give you actual chills. It's a weird mixture of folklore and horror, one which doesn't seem to work together until near the end, at which point they blend well. My first T. Kingfisher, and unlikely my last.

I read this for the read harder 2021 challenge to fulfill the prompt
"a book with a beloved pet where the pet doesn't die," and honestly it was such a relief throughout the book knowing that Bongo made it out alive!
Overall a good horror/suspense with a great supporting character for the the second half. Avoid this one if the idea of walking around the woods in the dark creeps you the hell out.
