I think this was my favorite of the books so far! The love interest was meh, but the writing is really settling and getting better, and Phryne was a delight in this one. I also thought the investigations proceeded rather nicely, and the multiple mysteries mingled well together and were well balanced.

There's an actual murder to solve in this third Phryne Fisher outing, and it's a more interesting read than the first two, so I may give Miss Fisher another chance or two.

This is the least favorite of the series I’ve read so far. The racism was a little much, especially because there wasn’t a narrative reason. It seemed to be mostly there for “flair” and “realism,” however the beauty of historical fiction is that, if we choose, we can create a corner of history where people are treated fairly. I only finished the book because it was short and

There was a story line I felt didn't wrap up. It was also slow to start. I usually get into the Phyne Fisher books quicker. I love all the characters and historical aspects of this series.

Ja, jag läste en till. Ja, jag kommer läsa fler. Dekadent 20-tal, cool kvinna och AUSTRALIEN. En dubbelarbetande morsa måste få mysa ibland, ok?
Ni ser att jag ursäktar mig? Det är inte för att jag skäms inför andra, utan för att jag inser att det - för min skull - finns mycket bättre och nytänkande (även i deckargenren) jag skulle kunna lägga tid på. Men börjar man tänka på vad man lägger tid på i livet börjar man onekligen lägga tid på att ha dåligt samvete... Och det är inget Phryne Fisher ägnar sig åt! Hon är ingen djup karaktär, det kan man inte anklaga Greenwood för - men hon är självständig, lever ut sin lust (till unga män, till dryck, till kläder), och har (såklart) ett stort hjärta för dem som har de sämre. I den här boken leder brottet ("mord på tåget"!) till att hon adopterar två föräldralösa flickor som annars hade hamnat i prostitution. I förra tog hon också hand om en arbetarflicka (som nu är hennes närmsta hand), och jag tänker att Greenwood nog vill visa på klasskillnads-problematiken som rådde i städerna under tidigt 20-tal. Speciellt hur kvinnor blir utsatta och utnyttjade. Gott så, men som sagt aldrig särskilt djupt. Men det kanske inte allt måste vara.
I den här boken stör jag mig inte på underförstådda utseendeideal, så det enda som sticker i ögonen (utöver det allmänt "ytliga" historieberättande, som jag alltså anser är motiverat) är hur de klagar på kylan hela tiden. Jag vet att Melbourne har Australiens sämsta väder, men kom igen... Vi har haft väder kring (och under) nollan och regn hela månaden - deras lägsta medeltemp ligger på 13 plus...
