All of my kindred spirits are either fictional or live too far away. Please don’t skip this book, I know that a lot of people do, but don’t or you’ll be missing out on so much heart and warmth.

I’m enjoying rereading this whole series this year. This one is like a collection of interesting stories.

I don't think I've read this book in 20 years, and I didn't remember a lot of it. I don't think I'd read any of these books in more than ten years, and honestly, it's a little bizarre to read them now. I loved them so much as a child, and so much of the charm that made me love them is still there, but there's other things I notice now too.

There's an unbelievably sad moment where Anne, writing to Gilbert talks about wars being behind Canada, and you know as a reader that Montgomery penned it after the Word War One, and you know that she died before the conclusion of World War Two and you can't help but feeling so unfathomably sad that these things keep repeating themselves. Or at least I couldn't.

There's a line where Anne talks about enjoying washing dishes, and I just about threw the book because no one enjoys washing dishes that much, I'm sorry. In those moments, you can really see Montgomery trying to model good, lady-like behaviour for her readers. And that, too, is somewhat bizarre to read over 100 years after these books are supposed to be set. In this book, I think you get the last of Anne as the child that everyone fell in love with, honestly. She's already mostly gone, but after this book, it's never the same.

And there's part of me that resents that the little girl that I so loved in the first book has turned into what I assume is a paragon of 19th century womanhood so as to be indistinguishable from so many others. But that, too, is the view of someone reading it over 100 years later with a very different set of morals and a living in a very different society.
