This gothic classic had all the unsettling, ghostly vibes that I expected. The way that everything was setup and written, from the hauntingly beautiful descriptions of Manderley to the growing unease and madness of our unnamed main character and narrator, kept me engrossed and invested in this story from start to end. Despite being slow-paced and largely character-focused, I somehow enjoyed the super detailed descriptions and imagery paired with the racing inner thoughts of the second Mrs. de Winter. It was fascinating to me that the big reveal came around the middle of the book and not the end, as we got to watch everything we thought we knew about different characters and events unfold into the truth throughout the remainder of the story. I enjoyed that not everything was clearly laid out and that certain aspects of the central conflict, especially regarding character's relationships to each other and the extents of their knowledge of the truth, were kept vague for the mystery of it all.

Like other DDM books, this was very gripping, although there were definitely some slow sections that dragged a bit. Also like her other books, none of the characters were particularly likeable but were interesting to read about. Honestly if they all just communicated with each other properly, none of it would ever have happened!

DISCLAIMER -  I read this text as a set text for university meaning I did not pick this up for myself. It does not fit my usual reading selection so my review may be rather biased.

I read this thinking it was a full version of Rebecca when actually it was an abridged version. It was fast paced due to the plot being shoehorned together and I did enjoy it.

Despite this though it did not have the original author’s writing style and after having read the true, full version of Rebecca, I do enjoy that more.

Many things in this book didn't age well--the love story just left me asking "why?" and the portrayal of an intellectually disabled character just reads as insulting.
