The tricks Erick did were really interesting and I loved reading about them and I enjoyed the Persian narration very much, but that's what I can positively say about the book.
I understand when it was written and what literary movement it is part of, but that doesn't mean that I can ignore all of the annoying things in this book. The Persian was the only one with a brain cell in this story and it was very hard for me to spend so much time with the rest of the cast. Christine is so naive that she sounded like a three-year-old child, Raul had the impulse control of an excited dog (and the brains of one too), and Erick, as he called himself, was pathetic. Their love triangle didn't make any sense (why would ANY of them be in love with each other?) and all of them need to learn some emotional control. Also, I really wanted them all to be blown up at the end. Shame it didn't happen.
I didn't enjoy this book at all. The only bearable chapters were the ones narrated by the Persian, and it took me a lot of work to get to them. The movies aren't that great either, but at least you can hear the songs, so I think they are the better option.

It was the first book that I knew I was going to have near all my life.
When I was a child I hear stories about the phantom of the opera at Paris, but I never thought about that. Not just the day I saw Webber's film at my house, completely alone. When the film finished I was a lot of time thinking about that character who lived beneath the opera house. I fault in love with his story and I started to look for more information about it. I was lucky because at my grandpa's library I found a exemplar of Leroux's book. Since then I have had the book at my night table or at every place I go.

Que historia tan oscura y temperamental. Y cuánta imaginación tenían Leroux como para escribir semejante maravilla.
Antes de empezar a leer la novela no sabía nada del argumento, había conseguido no conocer absolutamente ningún detalle y, desde luego, lo he disfrutado mucho más gracias a ello. Igual las primeras 70 páginas no entendía qué pasaba y me perdía, pero a la larga ha resultado ser una ventaja.
La historia me ha fascinado, no sé si todas esas trampillas y túneles se encuentran realmente en el edificio de la ópera de París, pero sería magnífico si así fuera.
No sé si es de forma intencionada o no, pero noto cierta influencia o, más bien, inspiración en el monstruo de Frankenstein para crear al fantasma. No digo que sean iguales, para nada, simplemente que todo eso de ser repudiado por ser diferente y necesitar solo un poco de amor y de comprensión para no volverse un villano es algo que ya había leído antes y me parece un concepto muy interesante y digno de explorarse. Desconozco si Gaston Leroux utilizó la obra de Mary Shelley como inspiración o si ha sido una mera coincidencia que ambos protagonistas tengan un fondo tan similar, pero es algo que me ha llamado la atención.
Quizás el personaje que menos me ha gustado ha sido Christine Daaé. Durante todo el libro ha sido una mujer sin demasiado peso, no llegamos a conocerla en profundidad ni podemos comprenderla, pero al final demuestra tener mucho coraje y sentir un amor lo suficiente profundo como para hacer un acto tan heroico, y me alegra ver que sale recompensada después de todo.
En general, me ha gustado mucho. Ahora tengo muchas ganas de ver alguna de las muchas adaptaciones audiovisuales que tiene.

Finding a copy of the book from the 60s at an antique market one day before seeing the musical on Broadway felt like an irrefutable sign that I needed to read it. While the general auras of the book and the musical are similar, their perspectives and developments are quite different. What the book cannot deliver in visual and symphonic spectacle it more than makes up for in genuine horror and despair in a way that the musical doesn’t or can’t quite commit to. The book was much less forgiving to the Phantom, whose entire character dripped with depravity and wickedness rather than the sensuality and pity evoked by the stage version. The true horror: men who believe they are entitled to anyone who gives them attention and won’t take no for an answer. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to fear every mirror that they look into for the rest of their lives, but also loves witnessing quirked up white boys in love going mad.

erik is the og mass murderer incel.. og joker...
did not expect to like this one as much as i did! idk i just liked the vibes. some sections (the logisitcs of the 20,000 francs, the stupid jungle bit) were unnecessarily long & were dumb and i hated them. i liked the epilogue, it really humanised erik (who is u know. just awful) and made me feel Sad.
what a fuckin wacky story. like ,,, the pacing was so bad bro.
+ haha funney about the "Communists' dungeon" constantly mentioned.. literally my room
