Thanks to this book, I know that black crepe bonnets are bad gifts for one's mother because they are for mourning, not Mother's Day. Whoopsies!

The individual chapters were discrete stories, carefully arranged and with some connections between them. Some of them were quite charming, but others were entirely too preachy for my taste. The variety is the real advantage to this book, but some of the charm of that will be missing if you haven't read [b:Caddie Woodlawn|205821|Caddie Woodlawn|Carol Ryrie Brink|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1388281233s/205821.jpg|1231594] yet.

I have always loved classic children's literature and have read much of it. I especially love the classics that have animals in them. This particular book is one of my favorites and I think it is equally good when you read it as an adult or as a child. The characters are engaging and realistic and the story draws you in. It is a book I enjoy re-reading.
