As both a history buff and a fan of A Song of Ice and Fire fan, this book was everything I wanted it to be and more! I'm so sad it's done and there isn't more yet! (Said every ASoIaF fan ever.)

I actually listened to this book on audio while at work. I'm not usually an audiobook person, but with the "non-fiction" tilt this takes I actually got a lot out of hearing it narrated. It somehow made it sound like someone was telling me an epic historical tale, whereas plainly reading it may feel like more of a slog through a textbook. The narrator was perfectly suited for the job, too. I really recommend trying it that way if the size and content seems daunting. (Then look at the pictures later.)

The book is written like a history book. People got together, looked back on multiple accounts and wrote the story of the Targaryen over the course of 150 years. It's slow-paced but excellent.

too many names of too many stupid ass men causing too many goddamn problems. there is a reason that the women in this book are superior and it is simply because they aren't men. so fuck
viserys i, maegor i, criston cole, daemon targaryen, jaeherys i, aegon ii, aemond, unwin peake, rogar baratheon, otto hightower, androw farman, blood, cheese,
and more 🥰.
also srs time, the book is good, but it got docked .75 for being confusing bc of all of the names (and lack of a map) and the other 1.25 for the misogyny, racism, and pedophilia.

picked this up bc i wanted to know what happens next in House of the Dragon. finished it bc i listened on audiobook and had a lot of chores to do lol but i am concerned how this man filled 26 hrs with incest and rape and child rape???

honestly i did like how it was written like a history text with the varying sources open to interpretation. gives it kind of a fun gossipy feel. but there were so many parts where mentions of SA/rape and pedophilia would be inserted that were totally not necessary? i get it's supposed to be the medieval times but woah i did not need to hear about most of the things that happened but also at least the mentions were not graphic

anyway, i'm mostly satisfied that the show stays pretty true to the book. it is pretty impressive that GRRM wrote like a hundred years of political history for his fictional universe lol
