Whenever I revisit PKD's writing, I'm always surprised by how much reading such stories as a young teenager ended up informing my approach to fiction.

This is the fourth book this year I have read because of its adaptation. First we had Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days, which I read so I could watch the David Tennent show (enjoyed both thoroughly). Second was The Pianist, where I actually saw the movie with Adrian Brodie first, then read Władysław Szpilman's memoir (both were absolutely incredible and new favourites, so fortunately the order in which I consumed them in no way effected my enjoyment of either). Then I read Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer so I could watch the Natalie Portman movie (the book was amazing, the movie was pretty good; above average). And now we have Minority Report by my boy Philip K. Dick, which I read first before watching the Spielberg movie with Tom Cruise (I am not adding to Tom Cruise's already inflated ego by calling it "The Tom Cruise Movie"). This is not something I regularly go out to do, read books based on wanting to watch/having already watched the adaptation.

But this book. Minority Report by Philip K. Dick. I don't have a heap of notes I can share on this book, because most of my thoughts are spoilery (I am trying to keep spoilers out of my reviews this year). I also don't have loads to say about the movie in comparison to the source material like I included in my Annihilation review. This is because, unlike the Annihilation movie, I was eating dinner while watching Minority Report, and it was tacos at that, so it was not like I could pause to jot down a couple of reactions. Plus, I had a Labrador to keep at bay, which is always a substantial undertaking in and of itself. (And I am trying to appease said Labrador with attention as I type this, because apparently I am neglecting him. Oop he has gone outside, hopefully this means a bit more progress on my end.)

But anyway. I finished this book a month ago so I need to get this review up (and ignore the Labrador eyes staring me down. Yep he's back). I haven't actually reviewed this book in this "review", and I'm afraid it's going to stay that way. Well, it was twisty, as is customary for a Philip K. Dick. (Ok, the dog's gone again, so write Isabella, write!) Dick is one of my most read classic sci fi authors, if not my most read. I have been trying to think and I don’t really know what my least favourite of his works is. (Maybe Adjustment Team, but that was my first of his and I read it a few years ago, so it’s probably just memory.) I love his twisty narratives, and Minority Report was no exception.

Thinnest, weakest characterization I've ever read.

Better than the movie, and very different. Basically beyond the premise (precrime policing exists, and the guy in charge is predicted to murder someone he doesn't know) it is essentially a totally different story. I think this one works better. A fun little mystery/thriller.

Since I really loved the movie maybe I had wrong expectations, but the story didn't catch me.

I knew this was a short story, but I was expecting something longer than 40 pages. It was still a good story with a fast moving pace. I can completely see why it was made into a Tom Cruise movie.
