This book tells the story of several female athletes who overcame different obstacles in their lives to become the best at their sport. Some overcame mental issues, verbal and physical abuse, cancer, illnesses, familial stress, and financial problems to be the best at what the loved. I have gained a whole new level of interest for books about sports and hope that I can find some additional engaging reads that I can relate to. This book had me near tears a couple times. This is of my favorite books of 2018 at this point.

A good collection of inspiring stories for middle-grade readers. I liked the messages of following your dreams, not listening to the doubters, and being proud of who you are. I also liked the stories that focused on overcoming sexism and racism and body image issues and adversity and working hard for their dreams. Overall, I think it's a good addition to non-fiction collections but not the best book of inspiring stories of women I've read. As an adult, I learned a few things from this book as well but it's certainly not written to appeal to adults. It's much too simplistic. (Though, be warned about handing it to the younger tween crowd. It does discuss eating disorders and mentions the n-word.)

I also could have done without Ronda Rousey's story and the glorification of violence and the lack of really dealing with her eating disorder. If something like that is going to be mentioned, I'd like it to be fulling dealt with, not just a passing comment. Especially since this is a book aimed at teen and tween girls.
