August picks up where July left off and keeps up the phenomenal pace and tone established in its predecessor. I’ve made my criticisms of the Conspiracy 365 series before, but Lord has truly hit her stride.

There were few fillers in this edition, and some more substantial plot developments. The hospital escape sequence is one of my favourites of the series.

Boges and Winter are also really coming into their own. The trio have formed a charming and likeable group. Their scenes in the cemetery are highlights of their tenure, and Winter’s relationship with both Cal and Boges continues to intrigue.

This time round, we felt Cal’s frustration in his scenes with the policeman and his mum and Rafe. The doppelgänger sequence is also fabulous and, despite almost collapsing with exasperation when they realise at long last who the hell he is, I’m excited by this thread now.

One very fair criticism has been of the formulaic cliffhanger endings. No matter what horrifying certain death Cal faces at a second to midnight on the last day of the month, we all know he’ll be conveniently (if unbelievably) rescued at about ten past twelve on the 1st.

After seven rounds of the same, Lord finally twigs and gets her own back by throwing in one belter of an ending. It’s not Cal’s mortality at stake and there is no knowing how this will play out. The sudden twist and sharp finish will leave you shaken until September.

Rounded up from 4.25. It dragged a little in the beginning, it started getting good towards the end

Read in an afternoon. Nice bit of escapism that seems to be progressing towards an exciting finish.

Best cliffhanger yet! It was pretty obvious that
SpoilerGabbi's kidnappers wouldn't follow through the deal like they said they would, but I had no idea that they would throw her off the bridge! I think the start of the next book will be Cal stuck at the end of a massive waterfall, and - like usual - he'll find a way out of it

I only gave this book 3 start because Cal's the luckiest kid alive. I mean, he escaped from the cops at least twice in each book, he loses all his stuff, then by 'luck' he gets it back. If he needs to get away quickly, immediately there's a good mode of transport. If he's getting chased by the cops, his friends will be there to save him.
I think I'm gonna stop there because if I go on and on like usual then I'll break my computer.

I'm glad I finally picked up the last half of this series. The books are so much fun to read and exactly what I needed- fast paced and short! It's fun to be immersed in Cal's world, even if some of the things that happen are not exactly believable. But that's the fun of fiction bad having heroes in a story.
