Excellent writing and a powerful political message. This isn’t a legal thriller as I think some people may assume, so be aware.

This takes place in India but really the injustices could’ve been mostly anywhere— which I personally liked. I really enjoys PT Sir’s story but that was really the only story/character I felt was flushed out enough. (And was the way Lovely was written offensive? I couldn’t decide). I didn’t think the other two characters were as interesting or developed, but PT Sir’s sections were enough to give this a high rating.

** notably (after reading some reviews) I should mention I’m a non-white woman with no Indian background

Brilliant & devastating. The writing is excellent, the characters are compelling, and the story is both ambitious in scope and intricate in detail.

Synopsis: After posting a political comment on Facebook, Jivan is arrested and accused of carrying out a terrorist attack. PT Sir, Jivan’s former gym teacher, sees an opportunity in Jivan’s downfall to rise in political power. And Lovely, an up and coming actress may be the only one with an alibi to set Jivan free, but it would cause her to sacrifice everything.

Thoughts: A Burning is such a moving and heavy story. I couldn’t put it down after I started because of the engaging fast pace and characterization. This book made me quite emotional, and I highly recommend to everyone.

Incredibly devastating and maybe a bit too close to home for the current political climate. A book about political power and the dangers of the draw of power. A book about how good people can do horrible things, and a book about how the innocent continue to suffer in the world. All of the characters in this book are people I root for, and all of them I related to on an incredibly personal level. Majumdar’s writing put me so deep in this story, and every character was beautifully complex.

A must-read.
