dynamic, tense and nuanced. frances was a very interesting protagonist. sally rooney will forever be an incredible writer

-.25 for the political commentary feeling extremely shoehorned in so rooney could get her views across without any subtlety, even if i agreed with her

While reading this book I was really torn between liking and hating it and I'm still not sure. It wasn't what I expected, I think. The main thing that threw me off was Frances herself. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't bring up any sympathy for her or relate to her in any way. I simply didn't like her, but then again I didn't like any character in this book, really, and it makes me wonder if it's meant to be that way or if I just don't like Sally Rooneys writing. Then the other thing that bothered me, that hasn't really gotten much to do with the actual book, that I still feel the need to mention is, how in the show Nick is played by no other than Joe Alwyn and maybe that's just me but I definitely wouldn't describe him as, and I quote: "Handsome to an almost off-putting extent" but since I already knew Joe Alwyin played Nick I couldn't even imagine him as someone else and it made me relate to Frances even less, because why would you sleep with a married man if he looks like Joe Alwyn?

I hate absolutely every character and almost every decision they made. Why was this so engaging?

I normally love Sally Rooney but this  book just made me so mad, frustrated and so many other things. It’s messy but almost too much so where the self loathing overtakes. Maybe listening to her books as audiobooks has kinda thrown off my perception of her writing but this wasn’t an enjoyable read for me at all.

Sally Rooney’s debut is no different to her other works in the sense that she creates fully realised and relatable characters.

Whilst not a traditional romance, the book is an exploration of modern relationships. It is thought provoking, frustrating and relatable.
