this is a story about love, in many forms. i liked only one of the characters, everyone else was so unlikable i wanted to punch them in the face (and THAT is what i loved the most about this book). i wasn’t on anyone’s side, because these characters captured the complexity of relationships and feelings and being human so well. everyone was right and everyone was wrong in a lot of ways. i loved normal people by sally rooney, and this book wasn’t what i expected it to be; i’m not disappointed by it, and i’m also not super sure i would read it again.

A stunning look at the messiness of relationships and the complexity of emotions. Rooney created such interesting characters who were all flawed but brought out important themes throughout. I loved how Rooney complimented the uncertainty of the characters' thoughts and actions with intelligent commentary of the socioeconomic climate in the story. I found it difficult initially to understand Frances and Bobbi's involvement with Melissa and Nick but by the end I could appreciate how symbolic and thought-provoking their relationships were.

Definitely prefer this book over Rooney's other novel Normal People, although, to be fair, I was probably a bit too young to read that book back then (time for a re-read!). Her characters are never very likeworthy and  definitely remind me of the main characters in Exciting Times & A Year of Rest and Relaxation. Even though Frances wasn't likeable, she was quite relatable in other ways. I guess you will always relate more to a flawed character than some miss-perfect.

I'm not quite sure how to describe what I thought of this book other than it feeling like taking a road-trip, getting to know the characters through observing and listening to them. It is a book that is very much about its characters and their actions. It's not a wild adventurous story but I was still on the edge of my seat, curious where the story would go. This is the second book by Sally I've read and her characters tend to be quite pretentious, not sure if that is on purpose or not. I do like the philosophical and intellectual conversations they have with each other though.

Not exactly my style, but definitely made me think. I really liked the exploration of different kinds of relationships and how complicated they can get. There were more twists and turns than I expected.
