A great book with down to earth characters. It takes place in Butte, Montana and Hollywood, CA. 3 women friends since age 5 grow up and while one becomes a movie star legend the ties that bind them together endure through WWII to old age, through love and one single act of violence. Both the female and male characters in this book are strong. Great read.

Life long story of Butte, Montana natives from early 1900s to more modern times. Story of friendship, loss and doing what is right, not necessarily what is legal. Sounds like Butte through and through - hard working folks trying to make a living in unforgiving times but they never lack in true friends and ultimately happiness. Effa Commander and Whippy Bird are the primary female characters, with their third in the unholy three being Mary Anna Kovacks who becomes Hollywood legend Marion Street. Marion leaves Butte, and loses herself. The rest of the Montana crew kept to their roots and their integrity.

I would give Buster Midnight’s Cafe a solid 3.5 stars. I love Sandra Dallas’ newer books but this is a backlist book of hers that wasn’t the best book I’ve read. It’s a slow character driven book where not a lot happens but a lot happens. That doesn’t make sense but the story spans over 50 years, so this story of friendship and family is set upon a background of a changing America that the reader only sees from Prohibition to after WWII. And for the characters they just live their lives. There are heartbreaking moments and moments of triumph but overall nothing extraordinary. Even the murder trial and the ending did-he did-she wasn’t all that eventful. But I laughed, I cried, I had characters I liked and some I didn’t.

I loved the characters. Dallas is great with the twists at the end of her novels! I didn't love the plot line centering around a prostitute, though...
