A truly inspiring mystery. If only modern detective novels could hold such intrigue. Characters like Poirot come once every few decades.

Hastings is visiting his friend, Hercule Poirot, who has retired but will take a case when it interests him. HP receives a litter saying there will be a crime in Andover on a certain date. Signed A.B.C. First it seems like a joke, but then Alice Asher is found murdered. An ABC Railway Guide is found near her. Soon HP gets another letter taunting him about another crime about to happen in Bexhill and Betty Barnhard is the victim. The third is Carmichael Clarke but the letter arrives too late due to a mix-up with the address. Police, HP, and relatives of past victims are searching when D is about to happen. Interspersed now and again are chapters about Alexander Bonaparte Cust who seems to be the criminal.

Police capture Cust but HP is not satisfied and gathers all the people related to the victims. HP realizes it is Franklin Clarke who wanted his brother's money. He conceived of this plan so it would seem to be a part of a series of murders. Clarke even had ABC as the patsy. Love this. Agatha is genius.

Very much felt like several episodes of Criminal minds where I was waiting for the next murder to occur. Such an interesting and quick (!!) listen.
