I hope Book 3 is coming fairly soon, not because this was the dreaded middle book of a trilogy but because this middle book was wonderful. Why aren't more people lining up to read these books?

Finnikin of the Rock ended on such a good note, I almost didn't think I wanted any more story from this series. But I should have just trusted in Marchetta. Quintana is a nutball and Froi is a hot mess, but her signature style is there and my eyes leaked multiple, multiple times. Her world-building and characterization is just so. damn. good. Have the next one one hand because I had to immediately open it up and started devouring.

THESE CHARACTERS SLAY ME.
THIS STORY IS BREAKING MY HEART.
THIS AUTHOR IS KILLING ME.

ahem.

A mad princess? A previously savage orphan boy? Prophecies? Chosen ones who are NOT physically stunning and perfect but real and flawed and fucked messed up? Love that endures horrors and tragedies and more horrors? Multifaceted complex characters that develop and shift and change who are full of secrets? Incredibly crafted and cleverly interwoven plots?

FROI OF THE EXILES is all this and more.

I was incapable of writing a review for FINNIKIN OF THE ROCK and though I managed to string together those short sentences above, this is much as you'll get from me. My mind is blown. That last chapter? The epilogue? I splintered.. cracked. But then that final paragraph? I broke. I mean, I was hoping for it but oh god.. Marchetta is cruel and wicked and amazing to leave us with that hopeful tease after everything and screw this review I need to read the next book now.

Similar like Finnikin of the Rock, Froi of the Exiles was hard to get into. A hundred of pages in, and I was still not engulfed in the story, which led me to putting down this book till I was in the right mood to continue again. Pacing wise, yes, indeed this book was slow. But I have to admit that the last third of the book was far more enjoyable and gripping than the rest.

Now speaking about the characters, I didn't like Quintana at first because she was difficult to understand and like there were three personalities of her (?) though later it was explained that she had the soul of another person inside of her .... Anyway, at least in the last chapters of her appearance she was tolerable in my opinion.

Many things were revealed in this book, especially the fact that Froi is actually a Charynite. And judging by the blurb for the next book, it saddens me that my favorite boy has to choose between the land he came from (Charyn) or the one that raises him to he is now (Lumatere)

Damn I'm secretly wanting him to stay Lumateran :(

BUT THAT ENDING THO. PHAEDRA IS ACTUALLY ALIVE AND WHYYYY SHE PRETENDS TO DIE IS A MYSTERY. I really hope she doesn't betray anyone.

“If your people mean no offence, they should not speak their thoughts out loud in front of their children, Tesadora. Because it will be their children who come to slaughter us one day, all because of the careless words passed down by their elders who meant no harm.”

Marchetta really does not shy away from the ugly stuff and it's really interesting how they are handled.

Her writing style just seems to effortlessly draw me into the world and the characters she's created; Isaboe is so strong, yet still so fragile and Phaedra... oh! I wish Lucian was nicer to you and can see who you really are.

So many plot twists and character revelations that by the end of the book, I felt a bit emotionally wrung out. In a good way though.

I was so afraid that Froi was going to suffer from second book syndrome, but if anything I'd say it's almost better than the first. The ending's left me nearly in tears and incredibly frustrated that I don't have the next one in front of me.

I really enjoyed this crazy story where we learn tons more about Froi, the boy thief from Finnikin. The story was much more complicated than Finnikin, but I loved it. I do think, however, that it should be an adult fantasy, and not classified as YA... just my two cents there.
