Short. Intense. Provocative.
I decided to share this book with Anna because I think this book could easily be classified as young adult. It has all the elements: the feisty 15 year old protagonist, Mary, deals with alienation, abuse and neglect at the hands of her parents yet she has a close relationship with her grandfather. There's a smattering of burgeoning sexuality. She confronts some serious "issues" (okay, indentured servitude and illiteracy may not be very contemporary issues) and ultimately she gains the power to overcome (albeit with fatal consequences ... sorry, spoiler alert) her fate.

I really liked the way this was written, to reflect Mary's level of literacy. It was an interesting story that kept me reading, and wanting to know what happened next. That being said, I think parts of the plot were very obvious and maybe a little 'overdone', plus it felt a little like tragedy porn at times. The ending was great though, definitely didn't see that coming at all!

Major content note for r*pe and sexual abuse

I flew through this book! The writing is simple, but incredibly precise! I always appreciate writing in which every word really matters. Tough story, but timely all the same.
