“I will pick Darling over my own wings because with her I am already flying. She is mine and I am hers.”

The Dark One by Nikki St. Crowe is the sequel to The Never King. Compared to the first book, this one feel flat just a bit. It did have more of a plot, but I liked the first book more. Honestly, they should've been one book to begin with.

Genre: Adult Dark Romantic Retelling
Type: 2nd in a trilogy
POV: Multiple POV's, first person, present tense
Age Rating: 18+

~Synopsis~

Winnie has chosen to stay on Neverland with Pan and the Lost Boys. But things aren't as she hoped. The fae queen and Captain Hook are ready to fight for control of Neverland and are willing to do whatever it takes to win. As Pan loses his shadow once again, can he truly stand up to Hook and the queen?

It's like seeing the wolf pull back the sheep's clothing, baring razor-sharp teeth.

~Writing and Setting~

I like Crowe's writing style, but it's not my favorite. There's not much to say about it as the majority of the book is just sex. As for Neverland, I did enjoy getting Hook's point of view and seeing that side of the island. But also, the amount of POV's we got was a bit much. I think there was like 7? I stopped keeping track because it was just so much.

But I'm too late. So close yet too far. The shadow evades me and darts away. And disappears into the darkness of Captain Hook's territory.

~Plot~

As I did already mention, there was more of a plot this book. But the pacing was weird. Every five pages, and I'm not even exaggerating, there was a sex scene. The characters couldn't go five seconds without keeping it in their pants. The shadow thing was interesting but I think it was a bit cheap of the author to make this an entire new book when they should've been one. For 200 pages, unfortunately this book isn't really worth it. But, I will say that the cliffhanger was out right amazing. Mean, almost. I need the next book because of it.

Magic likes magic. If only I had all of mine.

~Characters~

The characters only got worse in this book. Winnie was just horny and whiney the whole time, Pan was gross, Vane was confusing and I didn't like him, and Cherry was just stupid and also horny. No, they were all horny. The twins were alright. The only character that I actually did like was Hook, probably because he was knew and his POV's weren't about sex. The fae queen was also just ok.

“I believe in fairies.”

~Overall~

The Dark One seemed like a cheap escape. It is for mature audiences. I liked the first book but this was definitely a decline from it. There isn't much to say as not much happened. I will read the next book as this one had an incredible cliffhanger and I'm excited to see the story wrap up.

It's now or never.

3.5/5 stars

There's the spice everyone kept talking about!
I still think book one and two could have just been one book.
