Meh. It was... fine? Nothing exceptionally memorable to me, except my disbelief that so much could be accomplished within the timeframe it was set it. I don't know, it wasn't bad, I just didn't really connect with the characters.

It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t really good.
I didn’t really understand the whole idea of the plot, and i feel like i was dissatisfied with the ending of it.
I wouldn’t read it again, and I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to anyone either.

My name is Thomas. But you you probably know me as Jake’s brother, the soldier hero who is getting a bridge named after him. Yes, he is doing fine. Yes, my dad went to the war as well. He went to Iraq. Yeah, I know how to shoot a gun since I am, like, seven years old. It’s in out blood. The Bennets go to war and protect the country for you. What did you say? If I am ready to be shipped tomorrow? Hum, yeah, I guess.
It is Thomas’ graduation day. He has one night to decide if he will go to the army on the morning, or if he will just flee his responsibilities to a better place, to any place really. So this one night, he just let it all go; bonds with his former best friend from childhood, creates stronger ties with close friends and meet new people that will become family. And then, just then, will he choose.

I really enjoyed this book. Meet Me Here is a pleasantly original take on the « quest of identity » clichĂ©. I thought the enrollment of the main character, how it influenced his family as a whole, really demonstrated how much finding yourself in the nest in which you were born can end up being complicated. Is it what you want, or what your dad wants? Those kind of thoughts are real. They are a part of a teenager’s life and Bliss pictured it perfectly to me.

Another important chunk of the story is connections. Friendships, brotherhood, family-hood, love relationships. It was all handled by the author through this one single story. The main character wasn’t just flesh and bone and in a quest of his own identity. He had to find himself through all these links and create new ones and it was magical to see how much we are made of what others are. Feelings and ties were felt more than explained literally and I just enjoyed that thoroughly.

The fact that I never knew what would happen next was a real plus for me as well. Each time I wondered and made predictions about the next chapters, I always ended up being wrong. Bliss made some choices that I never saw coming, and that was for the best, honestly.

The only little thing that bugged me in that book was Jake. I know why he existed and what he was supposed to mean to Thomas. I guess what I did not like is how much he changed and the fact that we never really got to uncover what was going on with him. There was too much conspiracies concerning him, and I would have liked a better tied ending for his character. He was left half painted in my opinion...

In the end, I really do recommend this book to anyone. It was fresh, fun, limitless and real. It is not the best book of all time and it won’t change the way you see the world from now on, but it sure will give you a hell of a good ride.

This book had the potential to be really good. The beginning was too much like Looking For Alaska by John Green, but I didn't really connect with the characters. The story line was kind of mediocre, but I overall enjoyed it. I really wanted to like this book, but it didn't live up to my expectations.

I received this book from a good reads giveaway :) This is a story of a teenage boy on graduation night facing the decision of whether or not to join the army as his father and brother have. During the several events taking place on this night he reconnects with Mallory, an old friend, and faces challenges. It's a great story written well ! I love the cover for this book and the storyline.I enjoyed reading this one. I wish that the ending was elaborated somewhat more on. I felt the readers could have been given some more insight. I also felt that there was a lot going on in one night. It made it hard to believe that this took place within a few hours... Anyway over all it was a good read ;)

3.5 stars, I think. I liked this! I don't think it will leave much of a lasting impression, though... I expected a bit more from it? I liked all of the different people involved in the story and felt like I kind of got to know them well enough during the duration of the book. (It takes place in the course of one night, so obviously there's no way to REALLY get them.) I read it quickly, it was easy to read, and just overall really enjoyable for me. I was nervous about how it would end (I didn't want any ambiguity) and overall it kind of satisfied me.

Full thoughts:
I love books that take place in one night. The character just graduated or has one night left before college or is leaving for some reason, and they spend all night with their friends making memories. It’s just a fun plotline to me and definitely read-bait. This book definitely had that element. On the other hand, it had some military plotlines that don’t resonate with me as much. I loved one book involving PTSD and loved it, but read another with someone in the military and didn’t enjoy it very much at all. They can be hit or miss I guess but it’s just not a topic that interests me. So, you could say I went into this book with mixed expectations.

Thomas is shipping out the morning after graduation, to follow in his brother’s and father’s footsteps. It’s something he’s kind of always wanted to be a part of but also feels forced into because of the familial expectations. The story takes place the night of/after graduation and kicks off with him coming back into contact with his childhood best friend, Mallory. She has some complicated things happening on her end, and the two of them set off to complete some childhood missions. The book travels with them (and other friends, relatives, and new acquaintances) across town. Thomas is planning on running away by morning instead of shipping out because he doesn’t want to be “messed up” like his brother is now that he’s home from the war.

I’m not sure if this qualifies as a spoiler or not, so be warned that the rest of this paragraph involves romance
I was disappointed that there wasn’t one. In hindsight, I don’t think the book really needed one, but at the same time
I expected one. Based on the premise and beginning of the book, I was REALLY hoping for my favorite trope: childhood best friend to romance. I just love reading about people coming back together and the “meant to be” feeling. Alas, there was no romance to be seen in this book.

I wanted more from the plot though, to be honest. There were some solid ~adventures~ throughout the night and I loved meeting some of the characters, but I just wanted MORE. I felt like I got to know the characters as well as you could (when reading about just one night of their lives).

I think my favorite part of the story was towards the end when the meet the other veterans in the Waffle House. It was great to see Jake connect with people again and share stories. Again, the military theme doesn’t usually hit me hard (except for watching surprise homecoming videos, good lord those killllll me!), but these moments did. I was happy about how all that went down.

Truthfully, I don’t think the book will leave much of a lasting impression on me. It read really quickly and was super easy to read. I really did enjoy it, but it’s not a huge stand-out for me. Part of this has to do with the ending, too. I told myself I NEEDED a non-ambiguous ending with this kind of story.
SpoilerIt ended up leaving quite a few loose ends. I want to know what’s going to happen next for Thomas and Mallory. Their stories felt unfinished.
Overall, a good book that I’m glad I read.

Economical, intense, quietly funny and in places, quite beautiful (oh, and did I mention heartbreaking?). Got this from the library but will be buying it for MY library.
