Gorgeous! As a lifelong fan of the Graceling books, I picked this up as soon as I could! It took me a while to pick it up, I was worried that it might ruin my view of one of my favourite series if it was bad. I should have trusted Cashore! It had everything I loved about the series and more! Stunning worldbuilding, immersive writing, and great characters (I especially loved the sections exploring non-human povs!) This book got me out of a reading dry spell and was a great isolation companion. This is a very biased review, but I highly recommend Winterkeep regardless!!

I absolutely adore these characters and loved seeing what was next for them, interesting to see some more modern issues being tied into the magic system, I squealed out loud a few times at this one

Once again Kristin Cashore did not let me down. Those book was delightful, but also had me on the edge of my seat at times.

We get the perspectives of Bitterblue and Gideon from the previous books. But we also get the perspective of a few new character including Lovisa. It took me a minute to adjust to the characters and the new world we are in. But Lovisa grew on me and I hope we see more of her in future books.

This books is a lot more political than what I normally like in my fantasy books. It was my least favorite part of the book. Maybe that's because the political system in Winterkeep is so similar to our real world. I wish the politics where better wrapped up in the end. But that would probably take another book to conclude.

Like most of other books in the Graceling series, this book was overall slow paced and character driven. But there were parts that were suspenseful, that I couldn't stop reading too.

There is something really intresting about setting up a mistry in a fantasy book like this author does in all of the series. In this particular book we get to discover a brand new world with new characters while still seeing some of the characters we know and love from previous books.
This is also true for the narrator, there are so many narrators! One of the first is Giddon and I honeslty didn't expect to like him that much, i always looked forward to his parts. I think his character arc flourishes in this installment and it's quite beautiful to see his sweetness.
As always there is some romance, although it's not the main plot and there are more intresting elements to the book. For exaple Lovisa and her family
specially once everything has unfolded and we can see the inner struggle, the conflict with her own identity and how, eventually, she takes her power back

The only thing I would add is that I hope we can see more LGBTQ+ relationships between the main characters at some point in the future

If you are a fan of other YA fantasy novels, then you will enjoy the story of this book. Be aware of adult content that is not appropriate for young readers. I enjoyed the story but will be throwing the book away before I have children of my own who could stumble across this book and read adult content slipped into a YA story.

This book just came at the perfect time for me. I haven’t really been loving what I’m reading lately and this book broke that cycle for me. I loved following familiar characters but with some new ones in there also, they showed genuine, real and raw emotions throughout the story and they just felt like they could be real people. I was so invested in the story and found myself thinking about this book even when I wasn’t reading it. And of course Kristin Cashore delivered as always, this book is once again super sex positive and shows it all from birth control to the struggle for emotional attachments in a way that is real and needs to be spoken about more in YA.

I must say however that the beginning of this book did feel a little rushed to me. There wasn’t much time to get back into the characters and the world before we were thrust right into the main plot. Saying that, the series as a whole doesn’t really have a overarching plot, which I also find a little strange. Each book has its own plot which is just the characters reacting to what is happening to and around them. I’m not sure this is something I specifically don’t like, just an observation which I’m not sure how I feel about.

Overall this book was exactly what I wanted and needed it to be at the time I read it. I definitely need to read more fantasy and more series because clearly that’s what I like best. 5 stars.
