Although some techniques described in the book are a bit dated (or outright obsolete) now, the overall approach and the way of thinking about designing for different devices and various users are still relevant and the book is a solid starting point for beginner coders.

Finally! While I did read this five years after it came out and many of the concepts have matured in that time (and browser issues for that matter), I am glad I read it and have the foundation. Anyone who does modern web design should know all the concepts presented in this short read, although some have seen the end of their label as "best practice". Still, yay! I read it!

An excellent introduction to the creation of responsive web pages - pages that work well on any screen size and with or without JavaScript. This excellent book won't answer all of your questions but Jeremy Keith will give you a solid grounding in the fundamentals and a more than enough links to other sources to allow you to define and refine your technique. This slim volume is one of the better technical books I've read.

I don't normally buy books like this, but this is a great tutorial into proper responsive web design; very well written and simple to understand. I've not finished it - because halfway through everything kind of "clicked" and I could do the job I wanted to do. I'd recommended it.

In "Reponsive Web Design", Ethan Marcotte provides an introduction to the oncept of, well, responsive web design - mostly by example. Over the course of the book, he walks through the design of a website, starting by implementing (via HTML and CSS) an exact duplicate of an original design. Then, he introduces various problems with static web pages, and demonstrates how to make the example page more responsive. (Problems include larger or smaller than expected browser windows, mobile phone and tablet browsers, and users operating with "key" web functionality - think Javascript - disabled.) All the while, Ethan demonstrates the advantages of responsive, versatile, adaptable web design over static, "make it look the same in all browsers" mentality.

I found this book enjoyable and informative. The writing style is light, the example (a blog devoted to Robot or Not) not overly hackneyed, and the information valuable. "Responsive Web Design" serves as a great introduction to the concept. In particular, I like that, where a specific topic could get bogged down in details, the author provides links to some additional reading and moves on, asking the reader to simply take his word that said topic is important. For anyone interested in designing for the web at large, I recommend "Responsive Web Design".
