It almost boggles my mind that such a relatively short book could have such well written characters. I've really many 600+ page novels that have not been half as interesting or as well detailed and plotted as Amsterdam was. I don't always enjoy McEwan novels (looking at you Solar), but I really did enjoy this one.

Had a really slow start to the point where I couldn’t figure out what the main conflict was. In spite of this, the end was a nice twist.
I do believe they helped each other commit suicide and that they knew it was going to happen at some point, because of the agreement they had.
In the end, what Vernon did was morally bad but out of the two Clive was the hypocrite one since he didn’t help a woman that was about to be raped “because he didn’t want to loose his concentration” and right before dying e admits that if he had know the girl, if it had been Molly, he would have helped. But he has no problem in saying that Vernon is an awful human being for wanting to it George.

Interesting but certainly not as good as Atonement. All the characters are pretty flawed (which is usually something I enjoy in a story) and I kept reading to the end to find out what would happen to them. But not a book I would go back to our heartily recommend
