I was left wondering if the author had just found a thesaurus; so many unnecessarily unusual words. It completely takes me out of the story. And the story - much too much backstory on characters. Perhaps if one is a devotee of the series (I didn't realize it was a series when I picked it up) then all that would make sense. To me it was really just a bunch of unrelated discussion of people's personal lives.
